Serve over any soft cheese or brie for a great appetizer; use as a glaze on grilled chicken or beef. Cranberries were first used by Native Americans, who discovered the wild berry's versatility as a food, fabric dye and healing agent. American whalers and mariners carried cranberries on their voyages to prevent scurvy. Cranberries have long been valued for their ability to help prevent and treat urinary tract infections. Now, recent studies suggest that this native American berry may also promote gastrointestinal and oral health, prevent the formation of kidney stones, lower LDL & raise HDL (good) cholesterol, aid in recovery from stroke, and even help prevent cancer. Cultivated since prehistoric times in Peru and Mexico, red chile was discovered in the Caribbean by Christopher Columbus and named a "pepper" because of its similarity with the Old World peppers of the Piper genus.
