Strawberry Jam from Maine

One of the great traditions of summer in Maine is picking fresh strawberries. Locals will tell you that Maine strawberries are superior in flavor & juiciness to those found anywhere else. And what better to do when you've got more than you can eat than make some traditional jam! Only the sweetest strawberries are simmered to perfection with the right amount of sugar to create this wonderful jam. Just a bit of rhubarb is added for the special taste that is a Maine tradition. Like all of Bar Harbor's jams this one is made by hand in small batches with no preservatives added. Maine strawberry lovers owe a debt of gratitude to Peter Chase and Moses Smith. It was Chase and Smith who in 1805 organized what many consider to be the state's first strawberry festival in a field located about 30 miles northwest of Bangor. According to the "The History of Garland" by Lyndon Oak, Chase cleared land in 1802 for his homestead and planted grass seed on it for pasturing animals. By 1804, wild strawberries began appearing on Chase's land and became so abundant in 1805 that he and his nearest neighbor, Smith, invited the scattered residents of Garland township together to share with them a feast of berries with cream and tea sweetened with maple sugar. Strawberries are a good source of Manganese & ounce for ounce, strawberries contain more Vitamin C and anti-oxidants than oranges. They are also naturally low in calories and fat. A full cup of strawberries contains only 50 calories which is roughly one-quarter the calories found in a large chocolate chip cookie. Maine's South Berwick Strawberry Festival, always held on the last Saturday in June, has been running strong for more than 30 years. The Bar Harbor Jam Company was started in 1989 as a winter project at the Cottage Street bakery in Bar Harbor, Maine.  Since then the company has become famous for the way it’s been crafting its Maine Wild Blueberry Jam.  Today, the company's kitchen is located on beautiful Mount Desert Island, Home of Acadia National Park & near the center of wild blueberry barrens.
